Orrefors
by Jay3lle
Orrefors x JAY3LLE is an exclusive chess set made entirely of glass and handcrafted in Kosta. All the pieces have been meticulously cut, shaped, and polished by Orrefors’ master glassblowers. The overall design pays homage to its sources of inspiration—Ingmar Bergman’s symbolic world and John Selbing’s photographic art—with perfect precision: distinctive, decorative, and dramatic.
The chessboard consists of 64 separate squares resting on a thick glass slab with legs; three in each corner. The squares and legs are cast in clear and black glass before being cut, ground, and polished. The squares are then glued together onto a flat glass slab with legs. The legs are fitted with felt to prevent scratches on the surface.
The chess pieces are also cast in clear and black glass. The molds are used to create a base shape, which is then transformed into several different pieces. The number varies depending on the object and model. Once the molten glass has cooled, the pieces are cut to size and finished. Some pieces are precision-cut to achieve an even greater level of detail. All parts are sandblasted and polished to ensure a perfect finish and appearance. Each piece is fitted with a contour-cut felt pad on the underside to protect the surface of the board.
Every step in the meticulous process of assembling the board is done by hand by Orrefors artisans at the Kosta Glassworks.
The chess set box is made of solid oak and oak-veneered MDF. To do justice to its contents, the sides are meticulously crafted and finished with three layers of black stain. The box consists of a lid and a base with feet. When the lid is lifted, the entire contents are displayed in an inner box with contoured compartments for each chess piece. The chessboard itself is housed on a separate layer beneath the pieces. The undersides of the pieces, the inner box, and the box’s feet are lined with felt.
